You can’t document while documenting father & son on the road because you don’t have the energy or the time to. Finding that time, or that free hand, is a fourth job in itself. Half the time I filmed when I shouldn’t have, should’ve been concentrating on the road. And when I found the time to write I should be working, best I study up road maps & ski jackets. I never wanted to give the caregiving aspect much emphasis, to keep safe my dad’s privacy, his dignity, but I gave care every day. It was hard to avoid. I neglected to hold my GoPro during those moments, I do apologize.
But now I have a little more time to write, photograph & film everything going on. All. The. Time. Work is not calling us to the van. We don’t have to go to stores much anymore, and thank goodness in this time of year! So now I’m going to be like my father, as he watched my every movement these last three months and judged the atmosphere of every situation like a hawk. Must remain vigilant in this turbulence, when we are vulnerable…
For the record, he never judged. But he helped and tweaked me into the semi-professional I am today. He made it fun when I had none, and he made fun of me when I needed it. And what I did get to write was because of him, telling me the best thing I could do for him was to write. Write, write, write! Do what you love, son/lackey. What more can you want out of a dad/dungeon master?
